

Madara Horseman
The monument *Madara Horsman* dates from the 8th century, during the early years of the establishment of the Bulgarian State. It was the time of the Bulgarian Khans Tervel, Kormisos and Omurtag.. This is an imposing relief carved into a 100 m-high cliff near the village of Madara in north-east Bulgaria. The relief represents a triumphal scene symbolizing the victory of a sovereign over his enemies. According to some experts, monuments of this type can be found in the art of ancient Persia. In the early Middle Ages the representations of horsemen, or of horses alone, were widely liked in Bulgaria. They can be seen in stone sculptures, engraved in metal vessels, cast in the form of amulets, drown on ceramic tablets…etc. The Rider of Madara is a unique example of medieval Bulgarian art. It has been included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
