This year, in order to EVALUATE our works and mentorship practice, we
shall not be pairing the youths with anyone, this implies that there
shall be no Mentoring Programme for 2011/2012 session. We intend to do
a follow up on all of our past Mentees-Mentors Relationship, and this
shall be achieved through phonecalls to Youths, Mentors, Visitations
etc. We really want to know how the youths are faring and how much of

"The Thracian sanctuary in area of “Gluhite kamani” (The Deaf stones”) near village of Malko Gradishte is the largeast Thracian cult complex of rock niches in Bulgaria .. More than hundred of trapezium shaped niches are carved on monolithic rock, which arises from the earth like giant, 30 meters high.. The role of these holes is not fully understood, but is supposed they were used as funeral urns. 50 meters away from the niches are located several megalithic tombs, two of which perfectly preserved.

The entire funerary complex “Deaf stones” was surrounded by a large wall, the foundations of which can be seen even today.

A kilometer around the complex - no wind, no birds, no echo – absolute silence. This is a magical place. This place acts to anyone who visits it."

Eight Teachers from London, Birmingham and Manchester, came out on an educational trip to Hungary and Romania. The Mission was to connect the teachers with three schools, to compar programmes and methods and curriculums, especially with the Roma Children in their schools.

I took them to our Roma village in Nyirbeltek,where they visited the local village Primary School. Director Attilla was more then welcoming and obliging to share his experience with the teachers. The Roma here are so well integrated, and accepted, because of our work there for nearly 20 years. There is no more segragation and all the children were so happy, as now they can learn about their own Roma History.

They also visited a School in Hadjuhathaz, where things were a bit different. The Principle was very helpful and was amazed at all the interest of the Roma children. This is because our teachers were involved with Traveller Education in the UK.

After the third day we literally flew off to Romania to a School just outside Oredea.

Everything was so different in Romania, as we were driven by Pastor Imre Costa into the School,where 350 pupils were present. There were many differences and comparisons, but the staff were very gracious as we bombarded them with questions. Afterwards though, having fun, teaching English and playing with the children was just the icing on the cake.

The eight english teachers went home very happy and satisfied, with an experience that might never happen again.

Connecting, building relationships, swapping teachers and students. Comparing teaching methods, understanding cultures, religions and people.

Five Days of sheer madness bought all these vital things together. Can we learn some lessons from this??????

Dear Rosza is sadly a widow. She lives alone and finds it so hard to survive. She has just come out of hospital, and can only live by growing vegetables and raising chickens. She lives off eggs, rice and vegetables.

In between the Missions, I stayed with Rosza, and saw her need. So I decided to do something. We went to the local chick van, and bought 40 baby chicks. I also bought Rosza, the feeding bowl and water feeder. We bought chick feed, and then walked home with the box of chicks upon my head, (well how else was I to carry them). Simple things that make people happy, and can help Rosza survive for another Winter. Rosza is in a wheelchair. Didn’t cost a lot, and it gave me such joy to be able to do something practical.

St. George’s Day – “Gergjovden”

Bulgaria celebrates Friday, May 6, the Day of Saint George the Victorious, and the Day of the Bulgarian Army.

May 6 was pronounced Day of the Bulgarian army with a decision of the Bulgarian Cabinet in 1993. Since 1998 it has been marked as a national holiday, and non-working day.

Army Valor Day events are scheduled to take place around the country, including a national army parade in downtown Sofia.

On the sidelines of the celebrations of the Day of Bulgarian army, May 6 marks also the national feast Gergyovden, the day of one of the most popular saints - St. George, who is among the few venerated by Christians and Muslims alike.

The holy martyr St. George the Victor has been considered one of the most important Saints ever since Christianity became the official state religion in Bulgaria in the 9th century.

St. George’s Day - GERGJOVDEN is a holiday in honor of St. George who is the patron of shepherds and herds. This holiday has a lot of rituals connected to various spheres of Bulgarian life. The typical cattle rituals are interwoven with rituals connected with agriculture, health and wellbeing. In the spring night before the holiday lasses and girls gather flowers and herbs from the fields for the ritual feeding of the sheep and cattle. Three wreaths are made from the flowers: one for the sheep that will be milked first, one for the lamb that will be given as a sacrifice for the saint and one for the bucket with milk in it. The homes and the cattle sheds are decorated with green spring leaves. The shepherds take the herds out for a grazing before sunrise and when they come back a ritual milking is performed.

A lamb is slaughtered on Gergjovden as a sacrifice to the patron saint. A big table for the whole village is set on the green fields in front of the churchyard, outside the village or near the cattle sheds. Other ritual meals are put on the table except for the roasted lamb. The Gergjovden bread has a special place on the table. In the Eastern parts of Bulgaria the young girls stand up next to the table so that the hemp goes tall.

The Gergjovden sacrifice: The first born male lamb is chosen for that ritual. They put a flower on it, a candle is put on the right horn and it id lit before the slaughtering. In Southern Bulgaria they slaughter the lamb in the garden under a fertile tree and they leave the blood to get soaked in the ground and in Western Bulgaria the slaughtering is done near a river where the blood runs out into the water. It is believed that the blood has protecting powers. They make a blood cross on the children’s forehead to keep the evil eyes away. The bones are gathered and are buried in an anthill after the holiday so that the sheep become as much as the ants or they are thrown away in the river so that the milk start running like water. The whole Gergjovden lamb is roasted and a green spray is put on it.

Gergjovden bread: Bogovitsa, kravaj, kolak, a loaf for St. George, Communion Bread, ovcharnik, koshara (cattle shed), baltak, etc. – the preparation takes part the previous day. They are mixed together with new leaven for the sheep to have more milk. The water needed for the kneading of the breads (mulchana (silent) or tsvetana (with flowers) – has flowers and herbs in it) is carried by a young bride. The woman that is kneading the bread is dressed in clean clothes and wears a bunch of flowers tied with a red thread.

Church Holiday: The martyr saint George the Conqueror is honored by Christians and Muslims. He was the son of rich Christian parents and he himself becomes a great adherent of Christianity. He was decapitated in 288 during the time of the emperor Diocletian. St. George becomes the patron of wars and the army. Folk legends describe St. George as a man fighting with dragons.

Ritual table: roasted lamb, ritual breads, fresh milk, cheese made from that milk, yogurt, a milk and rice desert, garlic, boiled wheat, pastry with butter, pork brawn and eggs.

Widow's Mite...

The last time i read about the Widow's mite was in the bible....it is a story about a woman characterised by uncommon art of giving....she never hesitated to donate her last mite to her master! Really, I never knew the reality of giving your last card out on charity basis until recently when i was "tempted" to do likewise~and i had no option!

Yes, November 18th, 2010 is another day that i won't ever forget in a jiffy....just 4days after my birthday...although, the day started out on a bad note...my cutie, lovely baby girl was ill and i had to take her to the clinic...it sucks to watch your love ones hurt...and sucks more when you cannot do much to alleviate the pains and hurts....but, the day ended with smiles and good feelings... :)

Inasmuch as i hate to write about what i do to help others, i just cannot help but write about this, for some good reasons....Prior to that day, i've been receiving frantic calls from one of our mentees who needed some help because he was returning to the University...and he had no money to go back having lost his father some few days back....exactly two weeks ago!

At first my reaction was passive, because i felt i had no money...my salary for the past 2months hasn't been paid and i just knew it that i wouldn't be able to help in this situation....i felt hurt really, but what could i do when i needed help myself....:)

Then, i remembered i had N3,000 in my bank savings account....that was my last but "surviving" cash. And, my first reaction was a no-no-no .....because it sounded like a huge joke....giving out all my savings....just like that?! It was a difficult decision for me to make, but then, i remember how much this young man needs the money....i know he needs some financial assistances badly because only recently had he gained admission into the University and he's got lots of dues to pay for....and to worsen it all....his father died when he needed him most!!! Life seems so cruel to him...but then, his own life must go on...and, to the university, he must return...

Finally, i summon the courage to do as my heart bids me, and i left for the bank and emptied my widow's mite and transfered it into his account. ......finally, yes finally, i bid farewell to my surviving cash...lol.

Half of the time on my way on....i thought of my action deeply....a part of me regretted the action, but another part rejoiced greatly because I've only saved a soul....that needed some help....i felt happy and struggled to put my action behind me....remembering the woman in the bible who gave her all and was thereafter blessed for it....and, that truly was my consolation.....that, maybe some day.....maybe, i shall be remembered for good too.... i thought....i wished...i prayed solemnly...:)

Then, and then....my phone beeped....I received a text message from a friend who attended an annual WOMEN SYMPOSIUM organised by an ngo in my country. She wrote to alert me that I've just been awarded the sum of 750 dollars (N115,000) for my youths project! I wowed!!!!

I just couldn't contain myself....as i leapt for joy....isn't it amazing how sometimes our little and unrecognised act of kindness culminates to greater blessings...?

Melanie Price and Rita Varey were two Roma Women invited to the first Congress of Roma Women in Europe.
The congress is to Unite Roma Women in a view to empowering them, via their Human Rights, and Dignity. Also to find ways to dispel the stigma, that goes with the name Roma, or Gypsy.
Over 300 women gathered in Barcelona in October this year. The Mayor of Barcelona hosted all 300 women with a wonderful dinner in the City Hall.
For 3 days, the women gathered together in the audetorium to share ideas in what they could do to be included into society, and to be accepted by the World Governments and Countries.
Many positive testimonies were given, as women after women told of how they had been persecuted and had racial abuse directed at them, but they all told of how they had to avoid all negativity from the media, and the locals, to rising above it, and staying focused on changing peoples concept of the Roma, which has been very negatively viewed to the European public.
Roma women were Air cabin crew,Conference Hostess s,Domestic Engineers. One girl was a training to be a Police Woman. Another was a teachers assistant. Many were working in Social work. Some admitted they didn t tell their employer what race they came from. Some Roma Women had started their own busines s in Dancing, and Music, and Cultural Understanding Seminars.
All women had many stories in common, and the whole Spirit of the Congress was Electrifying as the Roma Women gave Hope to one another.
Most Roma Women could speak Romanes, and so Communication was easily accessed.
Everyone agreed that those Roma Women who couldn t speak the languge, should learn themselves, and their future Generations, so Culture, Language, and Traditions can be kept alive, and shown to the World, that Roma has a virtual Nation of its own, and will keep its identy, whithout the old problems of being misunderstood, and kept as a social low class Citizens,status .

The Forest of the Cross – Krastova Gora

Among the numerous famous Holy places throughout my Bulgaria there is one, which still strives to find its place in the modern Bulgarian history. This place has already found its place in the hearts of the believers. Its name is Krastova gora (The Forest of the Cross). Flashing through the ages under the name Krastov, this sanctuary keeps the memories of the ancient monastery ruined during the time of the Ottoman Domination.

From generation to generation it was handed by a word of mouth that here in the Rhodopes mountains in the place of the once set up cross on the mountain top above the village of Borovo, many believers found cure for their pains and consolidation for their sufferings.

Krastova gora towers at 1545 m. above the sea level. The meadow is 500m. long and 300 m. wide. The scientists investigate this region for the famous sanctuary of God Dionysios, once competing the seat of the Delphian oracle. According to others unquestionable curative influence of Krastov is due to the gamma rays coming from the urane deposits in the bowers of the Rhodopes. According to a master in theology, here was the dairy farm of the Bachkovo monastery. He also said that the monks of Krastova gora managed to obtain by entreaties from the father Superior of Bachkovo monastery the big Bacourian icon of gold alloy with incrusted large fragments of the life – giving Christ’s cross to the Trinity monastery.

There are also other versions. According to one of them the icon was secretly brought to Krastova gora to be saved from the violation of the Turkish invaders. Later, when danger of violation also pended over the Trinity monastery, provident monks managed to burry the icon with incrusted fragments of Crist’s Cross in the skirts of the same mountain top.

Years have passed but the legend is still alive. Christians and Bulgarians turned Moslems by force come to this place on Krastov day, light candles and hand down to their sons and grand sons what they have heard from their fathers and grandfathers. For decades on and on the highest place of the meadow rises the symbol of the Christian faith – the cross. In the 20th c. a new monastery was built on the site, while in 1936, tsar Boris III erected a high iron cross in the eastern part of the peak.

At the end of the eighties and on the initiative of the local people, a subscription was launched to collect subsidies for building of a new Orthodox church in Krastova gora. The “St. Trinity” church built a quarter of a century before by the people of Borovo turned too small to meet the thousands of pilgrims. For dedicates on end an overnight vigil is held every Friday evenings in the open Nature. In the autumn of 1995 the new temple was ready.

LAGOS—An Ikeja High Court, yesterday, turned down Rear-Admiral Harry Arogundade and the Nigerian Navys’ prayer asking the court to stay execution of the N100 million judgment secured against them over the molestation of Miss Uzoma Okere and Mr. Abdulahi Abdulazeez last year.

Four naval ratings, C.I. Jeremiah, S.A. Bullem, S.A. Kaniga and Francis Okolaogu, assaulted Miss Okere and Abdulazeez on November 5, 2008, for allegedly delaying them in traffic in Muri Okunola Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, while on the convoy of Arogundade.

Justice Opeyemi Oke, in her ruling in an application filed by Arogundade and the Navy asking for a stay of execution of the judgment pending their appeal, held that she had ordered that all processes should be served at the last hearing. She upheld the arguments of the counsel and consequently struck out the application. She directed them (Navy and Arogundade) to pay the judgment debt of N100m due to Okere and Abdulazeez to a reputable bank through the Registrar of the court as earlier ruled.

She held that: “It is apparent that the judgment creditors who filed a notice of stay of execution of judgment are not ready for the case to go on. The fourth and the fifth judgment debtor filed a notice of stay of execution of judgment and this was made known to all counsel present in court that day.

Since they have refused to serve the necessary processes to all involved, it is clear they are not serious with their application. The case is hereby struck out.”
When the case came up for hearing yesterday, Okere’s counsel, Jonathan Ogunsanya, from the Office of the Public Defender, OPD, urged the court to strike out the motion for stay of execution for lack of diligent prosecution.
